The Most Effective Ways to Live Longer

The Interview

Could you please tell us a little about your book?

It’s about how to live long, well and healthy and stay out of the medical system!

Did something specific happen to prompt you to write this book?

Just watching people get older and start to break down when they don’t have to. I’ve been writing about health, diet, weight loss, natural cures and the like for 9 years, and this is the culmination of everything I’ve learned about taking care of the body. And it’s not conventional advice at all!

Who or what is the inspiration behind this book?

All the fabulous people who beat me at tennis every week while In their 70’s and 80’s.

Who is your biggest supporter?

My partner, Anja Christy, who also runs my website and is my top Weight Loss Coach.

Your biggest critic?

See above- they are one and the same! But any criticism she gives me is just to make me better and it usually works.

What cause are you most passionate about and why?

I am very passionate about animals and eradicating animal cruelty whether it be pit bull fighting or factory farming.

In the last year have you learned or improved on any skills?

Yes I have significantly improved my tennis game, which it’s about time since I take two lessons a week and play every single day!

Do you have any rituals you follow when finishing a piece of work?

Nope. Just relax and read!

Who has influenced you throughout your career as a writer?

I’d have to separate that into two parts: as a writer, the great writer William Goldman, and the great science writer Robert Sapolsky. But for thinking, I’d have to say Ernest Van Den Haag, a professor I had at the New School in the 70’s who was an economist, psychoanalysist, theological historian, sociologist and lawyer. Not a bad resume.

What is the most important thing in your life right now?

My health and my family- both blood family and chosen. And in the latter I include our five dogs.

What are you currently working on?

A cookbook edition of “The Most Effective Ways to Live Longer” co-writen with my cookbook writing partner, Jeanette Lee Bessinger. Also, getting ready for my Weight Loss Coach Certification course which I teach a few times a year. And I’m going to present at the Anti-Aging Medicine Conference in Brazil next year.

Do you have any advice for writers or readers?

Readers, read for joy and pleasure as well as information. Writers write what you’re passionate about, but never neglect the skills that allow you to make others passionate about what you write about.

Is there an author that inspired you to write?

There are too many to count. Tennessee Williams was my original favorite when I was 12.

About The Most Effective Ways to Live Longer

In this entertaining and life-changing book, best-selling nutritionist Jonny Bowden, PhD explains how all diseases of aging really come down to four basic processes which he calls “The Four Horsemen of Aging”—Inflammation, Glycation, Oxidation and Stress. You’ll learn exactly how they age you and just what to do to prevent them.

You’ll learn how aging affects five major components of the body- the brain, the heart, the hormone system, the immune system and the bones and muscles; and how to prevent or slow aging in all these areas.

Finally, you’ll learn the secrets of the “Blue Zones”- those areas around the globe where people routinely live healthy and productive lives into their late 90’s and beyond. You’ll learn the surprising truth about what to eat, what exercises to do, and what simple lifestyle changes you can make to support a ten-decade life of autonomy, health, joy and productivity.
